E, D, & I Statement

Throughout my journey to become an art educator, most if not all of the courses emphasize the importance of an equity, diversity, and inclusivity. These courses,  have given great examples and ideas for including these important ideals into our classrooms as well as our daily lives. Even though I have limited experience with these personally, I hope to provide students with an open and safe environment where there will be a wide range of students from all different backgrounds.

Equity allows students to be treated fairly in the classroom with the access and opportunity for everyone. But of course, each student has different needs such as ESL or 504s. Making sure those students get the supports and resources that they need to succeed in the classroom is key to ensuring they reach their full learning potential. As each student is their own person and I plan to adjust my lessons to their needs and make sure they are thriving in their own ways in the classroom. Whether they need a modification, support, or resource, individually or as a class.

Diversity and Inclusivity I feel can go hand in hand in the classroom. Diversity includes the ways in which people differ, such as the characteristics that make an individual or group different from one another. While Inclusivity is an environment where individuals or groups feel welcomed, respected, supported, valued, and fully participate. Both of these embrace a student’s culture and differences and what makes them, them. I’d love to make sure my students feel included in the classroom. Especially with artwork that they can see themselves in and highlight multiple cultures and differences. As I feel it is important for a student to relate and make connections with artists as they learn about the history and work that has been created in the past and currently.

Overall, my experiences with these are limited but I hope to make sure my students are experienced with them. Making sure my classroom is welcoming to all students no matter their culture, experiences, or learning supports.  I hope to display posters and artwork that include these ideals and encourage them in my students and ways they can use them in and outside the classroom. And create a safe and welcoming environment for my students along the way. Where they are free to create as they wish to express themselves and consider these ideals within their art making.
